95% Rule

Propulsion Zones and 95% Foil Rule

The course is divided into three propulsion phases:

  1. Start Zone — Up to 10 and not more than 30 seconds.
  2. Foil-Only Race Zone
  3. Finish Zone
  • The parawing may be used for propulsion only in the Start Zone and Finish Zone.
  • After sustained foiling is achieved, riders must remain on foil for at least 95% of the remaining race duration.
  • Brief touchdowns for safety or correction are allowed.
  • Extended displacement riding or repeated wing-assisted recovery is prohibited.

On Foil

Defined as: Board fully supported by hydrofoil lift and not operating in displacement mode.

Stash Mode

  • After sustained foiling, the parawing must be fully depowered and stowed within a reasonable time (e.g. 10 seconds).
  • After stowage, the parawing may not be redeployed except for safety.

Redeploy

  • If fully stopped and off foil, redeploy is allowed only to re-initiate sustained foiling.

Shame Rule

  • GPS review may be used to evaluate compliance with the 95% foil requirement and propulsion restrictions.

The Honor System — Rider Declaration Rule

  • By entering, competitors affirm compliance with both the letter and spirit of the propulsion rules.
  • The event operates under an honor system and adherence is a condition of participation.
